Red Sox shortstop woes await Trevor Story solution, or a Willy Adames trade twist

1 hour ago 3

The Boston Red Sox, if they want to keep their red-hot streak going, probably need to improve at shortstop.

One option is in-house, Trevor Story, but still injured. The other is Willy Adames, who currently plays for the San Francisco Giants and would require a trade.

Neither is a sure thing, as both are on the downslopes of their careers.

Both, though, would probably be better than anything the Red Sox have at the present moment.

Story should be back sooner rather than later. When he disappeared due to injury, he was given an 8-to-12 week recovery timeline. This week marks eight weeks out, and he's supposedly making progress.

Adames would be fascinating in his own way.

"I do think Adames would be a good fit with the Red Sox," The Athletic's Jim Bowden wrote in a new article this week.

San Francisco is entirely out of the playoff picture, which is why Adames could conceptually be available in the first place.

The tricky part of Adames is that he has a huge contract, but ironically, because the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the Giants last season, they probably have some salary cap space to welcome Adames into.

An Adames trade might feel like overkill if Story is indeed back soon, but it probably behooves Boston to give themselves as much flexibility as possible, particularly because of Story's spotty injury history.

One way or another, they've got to get shortstop right.
