Yankees now expected to be stuck with $16 million issue that has no resolution

When the New York Yankees decided to make a deal for Ryan McMahon at last year's trade deadline, it was already viewed as one of the more questionable decisions the front office has made over the past few years.

Not that McMahon is a horrible player, but he's always been about a league-average to below-league-average hitter, and that was with him playing at Coors Field.

Yankee Stadium certainly brings the best out of left-handed hitters who can pull the ball in the air, but McMahon hasn't necessarily done that at a high enough level over the past year or so since joining the Yankees.

There are other issues New York will have to deal with as it moves on from him, and, according to The Athletic, his salary will be the biggest.

“McMahon’s past performance implies he should rebound, at least as part of a platoon. He has a career .757 OPS against righties. But the changes he made to his swing in the offseason and spring haven’t paid off. Another issue? The Yankees owe him $16 million next year, too, and it’s hard to imagine them cutting bait with that kind of salary,” Brendan Kuty of The Athletic wrote.

To hear that it'd be surprising to see the Yankees move on from him is very disappointing, but it shouldn't come as much of a surprise. We have to remember now that just because the Yankees want to get rid of someone doesn't mean another team wants him. McMahon's $16 million salary is an issue for the Yankees, so it would probably be a problem for most other teams in baseball.
