Yankees may cut ties with 7-time All-Star in favor of youth movement

The New York Yankees made multiple brilliant offseason signings, but one of them may not last beyond this season.

The Yanks signed Paul Goldschmidt as a free agent after his tenure in St. Louis was over. They got him on just a one-year, $12.5 million deal.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic thinks this will be Goldy's only year in the Bronx.

"Goldschmidt is proving this season at 37 that he’s not done," Bowden writes. "He just needs an occasional rest to stay sharp," Bowden wrote. "He’s at an age where he’s probably going to have to sign one-year contracts, like he did this time with the Yankees ($12.5 million deal). But he’s still a plus defender who can hit, run the bases and provide quiet leadership.

"It’s unlikely he returns to the Yankees in 2026 due to the emergence of Ben Rice, who would appear to be their long-term solution at first base starting next year."

Goldschmidt is batting .339 this season, and if not for Aaron Judge's existence, might be viewed as the Yankees' offensive MVP up to this point.

Rice is the future, though. He's got a .252 average with 10 homers this season (.881 OPS) and is 11 years younger than Goldschmidt.

The Yankees could end up opting to keep Goldschmidt around for one more season, especially if Giancarlo Stanton's health would allow Rice to stay in the lineup as the DH.

But for sure, it won't be an extended tenure in the Bronx for Goldy. He'll just have to make the most of the here and now.
