Yankees lose former Rangers infielder to free agency before Dodgers series

The New York Yankees will open the second half of the Major League Baseball season against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

Before the game, the Yankees learned that one of their minor league infielders has opted out of his contract.

If the Yankees do not select him to the active roster, he will reach free agency.

The 26-year-old was with the AL East club during spring training but has not made an appearance in the Majors during the regular season.

According to Francys Romero, Jonathan Ornelas has opted out of his deal with the Yankees and will become a free agent.

"Top prospect George Lombard Jr. is nearing a return from the Triple-A injured list and has a chance to debut late in the season," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "Max Schuemann has played well in a utility role, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they let Ornelas explore other opportunities."

Ornelas has played parts of three seasons in the Majors with the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves

In 280 plate appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Ornelas hit .299/.362/.480 with nine home runs.

With Schuemann on the bench and Amed Rosario and Ryan McMahon at the hot corner, it's unlikely the Yankees will select Ornelas to the roster.
