In a must-win game, the Boston Red Sox got absolutely clobbered today by their eternal rivals in the New York Yankees, being decimated in the series finale 16-1.
While the injured stars were able to return, they weren’t able to carry a lifeless offense. Losing this series was big for Boston, and now has them needing to focus up during this final stretch of baseball.
The returning stars came out swinging

The Red Sox surprised a lot of people when they recalled their stars Roman Anthony and Trevor Story for today’s game, after being away from the team for months.
Anthony was a welcome addition, and he proved to be the player he was last year once again. He went 2-4 today, one of those hits being a double from the first pitch of the game.
Story didn't get as much of a welcome as Anthony, and for good reason; he was doing horribly during his rehab, and fans thought he could mess up Boston’s flow. However, he did as well as Anthony, going 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
This game was a wake up call

Even with Boston’s returning stars contributing to the offense, Boston got battered. The floodgates were opened in the fifth inning, after a controversial call ended up giving the Yankees two runners instead of a double play.
This led to New York scoring five runs, and then later on, scoring 10 more. This has to be a slap in the face to Boston, showing that they can’t just go through the motions and expect to make the playoffs.
A major consequence to this series is that the Yankees won the seasonal series, meaning if Boston and New York finish with the same record, the Yanks win the tiebreaker and get to host the Wild Card series again.
Boston has one month left

Starting today, Boston has exactly one month left of regular season baseball to play. This series has put them back four games from the top Wild Card spot occupied by New York, and five over Cleveland Guardians in the final spot.
In their final month, Boston will have to face off against five playoff-level teams, and they have three easier series as well. The Sox will have to make one last good run if they want to snag the top spot, so hopefully this series dunked their heads in some cold water, and woke them up.
