The New York Yankees don't necessarily need Paul Goldschmidt.
But as the veteran first baseman's free agency has gone on and he hasn't signed anywhere, the door may have opened for him to return to the Bronx.
YES Network's Jack Curry reported on Tuesday that Goldy may be lining up a return to the Yanks, specifically noting that New York has interest in bringing him back.
Goldschmidt played for the Yankees in 2025 for the first time.

He turned 38 years old in September.
Goldschmidt is a seven-time All Star and a former MVP.
In his career, he's a .288 hitter with an .884 OPS and 372 home runs.
Goldschmidt signed with the Yankees on a one-year, $12.5 million deal before the 2025 season.
For the Yanks, Goldy batted .274 with only a .731 OPS.

He cut his strikeout rate but hit fewer home runs, an interesting trade off.
By the playoffs, Goldschmidt was almost exclusively a bench player behind Ben Rice.
He was still a strong hitter against left-handed pitching in 2025, so if he returns, he might just end up on the short side of a platoon.
Goldy would be a fun presence to keep around the Bronx, if he can come back on a value contract for the Yankees.
