The New York Yankees didn't play the prettiest defensive game Tuesday night in Baltimore.
It didn't matter for the final result, as the Yanks picked up a four-run win anyway.
But they did have one of the odder defensive plays you'll see.
On one ground ball, the baseball was in the glove of the third baseman, then the second baseman, then the first baseman. Despite that, they got no one out.
The problem was that the first throw, from third baseman Ryan McMahon, was supposed to be to someone covering second base. But with no one there, it sailed wide to the conveniently awaiting Amed Rosario.
He then tried to throw to first base for the only out that could still be had, but it was too late.
Here's the play, which had a nice rhythm to it but no positive outcome:

The oddity of this stems from the infield shift, which has Rosario a long way from the bag and forces the shortstop Max Schuemann to try and go cover second base in a way that rarely has to happen.
It throws the timing all out of whack, and in the end, it's a throwing error for McMahon.
The good news for the Yanks is that Rosario was in a perfect spot to catch the ball and prevent it from sailing into the outfield.
But for the future, this might be a setup the Yankees should put some work into, because that's not how it's supposed to look.
