Yankees' Cody Bellinger free agent rumor is bad news for potential re-signing

The New York Yankees are sitting this offseason without feeling the need to make a big splash. Unlike in years prior, the Yankees aren't acting aggressively.

They still have interest in free agents atop the market, but they have yet to make a push or sign a top free agent. That list also includes Cody Bellinger, who's at risk of departing this winter.

An update on Bellinger's free agency from ESPN's Jeff Passan doesn't bode well for his chances of staying with the Yankees. Passan reveals the Yankees "won't budge" in their contract talks with Bellinger, putting things in a standstill this winter.

Free agent rumor is bad news for Yankees' odds of keeping Cody Bellinger

"Until his price drops," Passan writes, "the Yankees don't seem inclined to budge. But, of course, moves from other AL East teams could change that calculus."

This update from Passan isn't the ideal one for Yankees fans hoping to bring back Bellinger. While he's not shutting down their chances of bringing the former Dodgers MVP back to New York, progress isn't being made.

Passan notes that, "(I) wish I had a more definitive answer. It's just all very fluid." This mention is an important one to keep in mind as the offseason progresses.

If the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, or Baltimore Orioles make another splash signing or trade, the Yankees might be more willing to bite on a Bellinger contract.

But, for now, the Yankees and Bellinger are at an impasse. The Yankees are reportedly not willing to move off their current offer and meet Bellinger at his lofty demand.

Even if the Yankees outfielder finds a suitor and gives the Yankees a chance to counter, Brian Cashman and company are seemingly okay going into 2026 with Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez in the outfield.

That's not the worst option for the Yankees, and while it's not like Bellinger wouldn't be an upgrade, the saved money could be used to sign other players now or in the future.

The Yankees are not going to meet Bellinger at his current contract demands, painting a negative picture for a free agent reunion this winter between Bellinger and the Yankees.
