Some fans of the New York Yankees have grown increasingly frustrated with shortstop Anthony Volpe's lack of growth at the plate and in the field.
Last year, Volpe had his third straight season with a .666 OPS or lower and made countless untimely errors in the field. The former first-round pick is not turning out the way many had hoped, though he dealt with a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder throughout last year.
Yet, general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone remain confident the 24-year-old has time to figure it out, and there's a belief Volpe can play up to standard as the shortstop of the Yankees.
Boone makes stance on Volpe clear
Volpe will start the regular season on the injured list while he rehabs from offseason surgery to repair the torn labrum. Jose Caballero, MLB's stolen base leader last season with 49, will start in his absence.
Boone joined WFAN Sports Radio NY on Monday morning, saying he thinks Volpe can earn the spot back when he returns from the IL.
"I still think Anthony's gonna be a frontline shortstop in this league," said Boone. "Everyone's path isn't linear. We always want it to be, and that can be tough, especially in New York, where you're kind of finding your way."
When asked if the Yankees have a cut-off point with Volpe, a chance to become a frontline shortstop as Boone referenced, New York's manager had a blunt response:
"Sure," Boone said with a stoic demeanor. "Yeah, sure."
