Browns' Todd Monken makes Shedeur Sanders announcement for 2026 season

The Cleveland Browns have a new head coach in former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. He got the Browns job over Jim Schwartz, and while there's some disconnect there, the offensive side of the ball should improve.

But, while the running back and tight end rooms are all but certain, the Browns do have some big questions at wide receiver, offensive line, and especially quarterback.

During his introductory press conference, Monken was asked for his thoughts on the quarterback room. And his answer, as shared by Underdog NFL on Twitter/x, was a big announcement for Shedeur Sanders for the 2026 NFL season.

Monken revealed that, as of now, before free agency and the new league year begins, "Browns starting QB in 2026 still to be determined."

Sanders doesn't have a confirmed starting job for the 2026 season based on this answer. While Monken and Sanders had a positive interaction when he first showed up at the Browns facility, there's still some doubt over the starter next year.

It's hardly a surprise at this point in the offseason. It's very early, and while Sanders might provide the best upside for the Browns at the moment, they could turn to Dillon Gabriel, Deshaun Watson, or some other QB in free agency or the draft.

But, regardless of what the Browns wind up doing, as of right now, there is no indication of what will happen with the quarterback room in 2026.

Sanders, after his rookie year, in which he made seven starts and an emergency relief appearance for Gabriel, has some optimism for the future.

He had 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with a 56.5% completion rate in an iffy rookie year. But the arm talent and potential he flashed at times are somewhat appealing.

While he might bring the highest upside, for now, Monken isn't making any decisions on the starter for 2026. It's not a surprise announcement from Monken, but it does firmly paint a picture of where things stand entering the offseason.
