John Cena officially ended his 23-year WWE in-ring career at Saturday Night's Main Event. Following the show, the company made a sudden change to his status.

The Never Seen 17 wrestled Gunther in a barnburner at Saturday Night's Main Event in front of a jam-packed crowd in Washington, DC. Cena gave it his all, but failed to conquer The Ring General in the end.

The closing moments of the match saw John Cena tap out to Gunther's sleeper hold with a smile on his face, in a passing of the torch moment.

After the match, Triple H and the entire locker room came out to surround The Cenation Leader in the ring. The Hunter hugged Cena and pointed him to the big screen for a video package.

After a touching tribute, John Cena left his wrestling boots and wristbands in the middle of the ring and rode off into the sunset.

Following the show, WWE moved his profile to the alumni section, taking him off the current roster. This confirms that the 48-year-old icon will never wrestle again.

Triple H explains why John Cena lost his final WWE match

Speaking on Saturday Night's Main Event's post-show, Triple H said Gunther beating John Cena was best for business and that The Never Seen 17 honored a long-running tradition of putting wrestlers over on their way out.

“There are time-honored traditions in our business. There are way that you handle your business. John [Cena] has said the right thing his entire career that it is about leaving this place better than you found it. I think that's there’s no way for people to understand that in the moment, but you do what is right for the business, you do what is right for this industry, John has done that his entire career, and I’m going to do that my entire career. What I will do what I believe is right for this business. It just is what it is — It’s part of what we do. That is the role we have chosen.”

With his in-ring career over, it will be interesting to see when John Cena takes his rightful place in the Hall of Fame.
