India has made a brilliant start at the World Boxing Cup Finals 2025 in Greater Noida, securing four medals on the very first day of the tournament. The Indian team's success came as four boxers won their quarter-final matches to reach the semi-finals.
Because this competition only features the world's top eight boxers in each category, advancing to the semi-finals automatically guarantees a podium finish, meaning at least a bronze medal for the winners. The four medalists are Minakshi Hooda, Preeti Pawar, Ankush Phangal, and Narender Berwal, who delivered flawless and dominant victories to put India in a commanding position.
The Indian women's team set a high standard with two powerful performances. Reigning world champion Minakshi Hooda, boxing in the 48kg category, won her fast-paced bout with a clear 5-0 score against Bolat Akbota from Kazakhstan.
Following her lead, Preeti Pawar, competing in the 54kg division, also claimed an impressive 5-0 victory. She used sharp combinations to defeat Uzbekistan’s former youth world champion Nigina Uktamova, showcasing excellent ring control and technique.
The men's team was equally successful. In the 80kg category, Ankush Phangal gave a composed and focused performance. He first absorbed the pressure from Japan’s Go Wakaya before switching gears to secure a unanimous 5-0 win.
The heavyweight division (90+ kg) saw a true display of fighting spirit from Narender Berwal. Despite getting a cut above his eye, Narender fought through the pain with disciplined defence, earning a gritty 4-1 decision over Ukraine’s Andrii Khaletskyi and sealing the fourth medal for the nation.
Looking Ahead to More Podium Finishes at World Boxing Cup Finals
This exceptional start promises more action in the days to come. Several other Indian boxers are scheduled to enter the ring, including Pawan Bartwal (men's 55kg), Sumit (men's 75kg), and Naveen Kumar (men's 90kg).
One of India's biggest medal hopes, Commonwealth Games champion Nikhat Zareen, is expected to begin her campaign directly in the semi-finals later in the competition. However, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain is not participating due to an injury, with Saweety Boora stepping in for the women's 75kg category.
