I just found this guy crying in the rocks outside. Can anyone help give an age estimate? He has teeth and weighs 415g.

he has not tried to walk at all. I also don't have milk replacer, eggs, or yogurt on hand and it's 9 pm so all the stores around me are closed. Kitten Help

Unsure on s but I think he is a boy. The orange spot on his ear is the lighting, he is not a calico. I heard him crying, did not see any other kittens or mother cat around.

  • Knowing this little fluffball was not just hurt or hungry, but also lonely, makes this sight even more heartbreaking to imagine. What would you do if you knew a hurt kitten was alone, outside, in the middle of the night? We'd all like to think we would be the first to save them, but that's not true for all people. But at least this one person did something. And that's ameowzing.

  • 07

Edit; Walmart a few towns over was still open and did have milk replacer. Kitten seems very tired. He is in a dog crate with blankets and a heating pad.

  • 08

We did manage to make him potty. I'm going to ask my dad to let me borrow his trap first thing in the morning to see if we can catch mama cat and have her spayed, and then hopefully catch and socialize any other kittens and find homes for them.

  • 09

He is currently in a dog crate with my electric blanket and some felt blankets. He still seems quite lethargic but

  • 10

was drinking, I don't know how long he was in the rocks for. He still has not made any attempt to walk.

  • We know this is quite a scary situation. We once saved a lonely kitten like this one - he started out fine, getting stronger with each day, but something was apparently very wrong. Because then the lethargy came in. Despite the vet visits, he didn't make it, and our heart is broken about it every single day since. But we know how scary kitten lethargy is. It can be slow or immediate, occurring for many reasons (that vets probably know way better than us), but it's never an easy experience. At least here, we can be happy this kitten got over his lethargic condition.

He is doing well this morning. Lapped up all the gruel, is walking and active today. He is still a bit clumsy. I have a vet appointment scheduled for this evening, they were able to squeeze me in. I have

  • 13

not seen mama cat again, I did spot her last night with another kitten. The other kitten was walking around and following mom, so I'm thinking about 4 weeks is correct and this guy might have strained himself trying to get out of the rocks. In any case, he's doing well.

I appreciate all the awards, but if you're paying to give me an award, please direct it to kitties in need in rescues and shelters with kitten season happening, they're soon to be flooded with little kits needing homes.

  • That's a very cute thing of this person to say. It can be interpreted as “I've got this one, he's going to be fine. Now, go help kittens with no one else who can help them.” And we couldn't agree more.

  • 15

Final update for now unless I do successfully trap Mama, he was much much better this morning. The vet diagnosed him with being tired, the thing with his legs was a combo of low bl d sugar, exhaustion, and some strain from being in an awkward position.

  • 16

doinmydarndest about 4 weeks I would say. cutie patootie

  • 17

bunny-rain OP That was my guess as well. I think Mama cat might have abandoned him unfortunately. He was stuck pretty deep in the rocks and couldn't seem to get out, when we did get him out his legs were splayed out. He did not try to walk at all.

  • 18

He also looks exactly like a mama cat I've seen around before who had kittens under the porch last year and we would leave food for her, makes me wonder if she knew that the humans would care for her kitten

  • 19

he has started moving his legs. He can't walk confidently, but can move a little bit, so he is thankfully not paralyzed. It is concerning to me since everything I see online says a 4 week old should be walking confidently. Might just be tired, I hope he's just tired, I'm getting him to

  • 20

the vet as soon as I can regardless. He doesn't seem healthy to me, he has dirt encrusted in his ears and toes. No sign of fleas. I'm really hoping he gets along with and "learns how to cat" from my resident cat.

  • 21

I did manage to get milk replacer, Walmart is open later than the other stores in my area. I didn't think that they carried milk replacer, but they do. So for anyone else who finds themselves in this situation, check Walmart.

  • 22

samissam24 You and your family are very kind op. Just wanted to say that and thank you very much for caring!

  • 25

bunny-rain OP We were actually looking for another cat so our kitty could have a friend. Cat distribution system be distributing

  • 26

humanslashgenius99 In another comment, you mentioned you have a cat. If you have pate food, you could mash some up with warm water and see if he will eat. If you have the kind with gravy, he may lick some off your finger.

  • 27

My guess is he is about 3-4 weeks. If his legs are splayed, unfortunately, they may have broken when he got stuck but if he does not seem to be in pain, he could have swimmers syndrome. That is relatively easy to fix by binding his legs over time. I believe kitten lady may have a video on how to do it safely.

  • 28

bunny-rain OP He isn't acting like he is in pain but is very lethargic. I'm bringing him to the vet ASAP. Walmart was still open a few towns over, drove over there and did find milk replacer. I didn't think they were open this late but they are thankfully.

  • 29

humanslashgenius99 d If you have any karo or maple syrup, you could add a little drop to his gums to bring his bl sugar up and stimulate appetite. If you feel comfortable, keep him warm by putting him under your shirt or you can wrap him in a warm towel from the dryer. Hopefully, he just needs to eat and get his sugar up but just make sure he is warm (about a half hour) before you feed him.

  • 30

Ok-Stress-3570 I just want to say - this comment gave me hope in humanity. Thanks for doing all that for this cutie pie.

  • 31

    Impossibleish Any concern of paralysis?

  • 32

bunny-rain OP He can move them, just doesn't seem to be able to actually go anywhere. I think he might be just tired and disoriented because I have seen him kicking his legs around. I need to get those

  • 33

d in rocks out of there, those things are a kitten trap. Too heavy for me or my mom to lift. Neither of us are super strong physically. I've found a feral litter that a different mama did return to in there too that we had to fish out.

  • 34

hello_madness 10 has he tried to walk at all since you made this post? what do you mean by "his legs were splayed out?" sorry if these seem like odd questions, kittens and puppies can have a

  • 35

condition called swimmers syndrome where their limbs literally splay out, and it's usually not diagnosed until they start walking at 3-4 weeks. it can often be corrected with early intervention though!

  • 36

bunny-rain OP When we first pulled him out, he was holding his legs way out to the side. He has tried to walk now, so if he does have swimmers leg, it's not severe. He can walk but not confidently. From what I've read online, a 4 week old kitten is supposed to be able to walk confidently. I am

  • 37

unsure at this point if he might have some sort of abnormality or if it's just lethargy. In any case, it's for the vet to help us figure out. Sorry for conflicting info, I'm kind of updating as we go.

tigress88 Hi! Kitten foster of 16+ yrs. I usually focus on neonates. Kitten is about 4 weeks old.

  • 40

Since you don't have any kitten milk replacer on hand, I recommend blending up some canned cat food and adding a bit of water to it and syringe feeding some.

  • 41

Then get some Kitten Milk Replacer ASAP if the kitten doesn't take to the wet food. I'd do gruel (wet food with kitten milk replacer mixed in). and if he doesn't take to that then he would need to be bottle fed.

  • 42

The kitten lady is an amazing resource and has charts available to show you how often he'll need feeding.

  • 43

bunny-rain OP I did manage to get some milk replacer. He is eating the gruel. Still quite lethargic but does have an appetite

  • 44

hereforthebooooze I just have to put it out there because the first time I fostered the SPCA gave me 3 tiny kittens who lost their mom and were very tiny. Long story short 2/3 ended up d_ng and it was such a tragic shock and terrible feeling for me. The

  • 45

second one was fading in front of me. I rushed the kitten to the SPCA and I was determined not to lose her after the first one. Unfortunately she just was not healthy enough and they couldn't help her. I was sobbing violently in the lobby of the SPCA and the workers told me many tiny kittens without mothers just don't

  • 46

make it. I wasn't prepared for that as a first time foster. If this kitten doesn't make it you did EVERYTHING you could. And if he does make it, well you just got a new bestie. Here's a pic of tiny kitten #3 who is now a grown man! Best of luck and you're doing amazing.

bunny-rain OP What a pretty kitty! This is my adult kitty I also found as a kitten under the porch, but she was a lot older. She was around 7 weeks when we got her.

  • 49

I'm not very hopeful about this kitten. A 4 week old kitten should be able to at least start walking and exploring. If he doesn't make it, at least he got a warm, safe home for a little while.

  • 50

Kitty seems a little more active today. Licked up the gruel no problem. Yesterday, he was just sitting and not moving at all, today he kind of toddled to the food as I was holding it. I'm thinking now it was just exhaustion from being stuck in the rocks.

  • 52

I have seen the mama cat. She has another kitten who is active and following her around, so I'm going to say these guys are at least 4 weeks. If she hasn't moved the litter, I'm going to attempt to trap her and grab the other kitten, bring them in,

  • 53

and let her raise them but keep the kittens human socialized too so that when they're older, they can be adopted. Then once they're weaned, mama can be spayed.

  • 54

I have interacted with this mama cat before. She was here last year and we couldn't catch her, but we also didn't try to trap her because my mom and I both had long shifts and didn't want to risk getting a kitty or whatever else triggers that trap stuck for that long. My adult cat is one of her kittens from last year.

  • 55

Vets office doesn't open for another hour, making an appointment there will be top priority I saw a few people ask what city I'm in for resources, I do not live in a city but my closest cities are Kalamazoo, MI and South Bend, IN. I don't know what the laws about transporting animals across state lines are though, I live in Michigan.

  • 56

bunny-rain OP Have an appointment secured for this evening. He is walking today, still clumsy but walking around. He probably just got strained while he was stuck. He seems more energetic now.
