Will Trey Benson be back in Week 10? Latest injury update on Arizona Cardinals RB

2 hours ago 2

The Arizona Cardinals have been without the services of running back Trey Benson since he was injured in Week 4.

Benson, who was given the starting role after the season-ending injury to James Conner, is recovering from a knee injury that landed him on injured reserve.

In Benson's stead, the Cardinals have deployed a trio of running backs in the last four games, including Bam Knight, Emari Demercado and Michael Carter, all of whom have contributed to varying and frustratingly inconsistent degrees.

Benson should once again take the reins of the backfield upon his return, but when exactly will that return be? Here's what we know.

Will Trey Benson be back in Week 10?

THURSDAY UPDATE: The Cardinals did not designate Benson to return from IR on Thursday, so he did not practice and is looking like he's going to sit out in Week 10.

UPDATE: Head coach Jonathan Gannon revealed that Benson will not practice on Wednesday, which isn't a great sign for his Week 10 status. However, Gannon did note that Benson is progressing through his injury.

"He's doing well. Take it day-by-day there," Gannon said of Benson. "He's not gonna be out there today, but he is doing better. What does close mean? I don't know what close means. Take it day-by-day, but he's doing well. He's progressing."

END OF UPDATE

Sadly, there is no concrete answer to this question, but there is at least a chance Benson comes back this week.

Since he was placed on injured reserve in Week 5, the Cardinals have played in four games, so Benson is now past the four-game minimum for an injured reserve stay.

That means he's eligible to return in Week 10, although we don't have any idea if that will actually happen. There has been no indication one way or the other.

The first sign Benson is on the cusp of getting back on the field will be when he is designated to return from the list.

Arizona will return to the practice field on Wednesday for its first session of the week ahead of the Week 10 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

We should know more then.

Who is Trey Benson's handcuff?

Another tough question.

At first, it looked like Carter would take the reins of the backfield, but it wasn't long before he was demoted.

Then, it looked like Knight would be the guy, but a wrench was thrown in that idea after he was apparently surpassed by Demercado in Week 9. Demercado out-touched Knight, 15-11, and had five more carries.

We'll see what the Cardinals will do in Week 10 if Benson does not return, but for now it looks like a two-man backfield with Knight and Demercado, with the very slight edge going to the latter when it comes to who will get more work.
