Anyone hoping for some quarterback controversy in Minnesota isn't going to get it.
Just as J.J. McCarthy is ready to come back from an ankle injury, Carson Wentz is hurt.
On Monday, the Vikings placed Wentz on Injured Reserved with a left shoulder injury. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, he'll undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Wentz probably hadn't played quite well enough to hold McCarthy back, but it was at least going to be interesting.
Now, not so interesting, as long as McCarthy is indeed ready to return.

The Vikings signed Wentz shortly before the season began to be their QB2.
He became the starter after McCarthy got hurt in Week 2.
McCarthy has gone through workouts in the last couple weeks but not yet been deemed ready. Now, he's going to have to be ready.
The Vikings' new No. 2 quarterback is Max Brosmer, an undrafted rookie out of the University of Minnesota who had a strong preseason but also isn't likely ready to start an NFL game.

There's always a chance the Vikings seek out a new veteran backup to align behind McCarthy, too.
The Vikings have a big game in Week 9. They travel to Detroit for an NFC North clash with the Detroit Lions.
McCarthy has been out for a month and a half. He'll have to hit the ground running to keep up with the Lions.
