Football’s center of gravity has been shifting in recent seasons, and Saudi Arabia is a big part of the reason why. If you want tradition and history, then Europe is still the place to be, but the Saudi Pro League is fast establishing itself as a destination all its own. More and more fans are checking daily scores and standings on CafeScore, and the SPL is getting just as much attention at times as Europe’s biggest matches and results.
Other leagues have tried and failed to rise to higher levels of popularity and what separates the SPL primarily is just how fast the change has come. In just a short span of time the league went from periphery to being present in the global conversation on a more regular basis. There was some attention after the World Cup and that helped, but much of the growth has taken place because of the larger scale and resources that SPL brings to the table. Transfers from the SPL now break into the same news cycles as major European deals. Broadcast reach continues to grow, and clubs in the SPL are developing legitimate stadium projects that actually come to fruition.
Cristiano Ronaldo is another factor that accelerated the shift. Once he signed, it signaled to everyone that Saudi Arabia was building something real that may stand the test of time. Ronaldo’s presence changed how the league was perceived overnight. Then, Neymar, Karim Benzema, and other high profile players followed suit, and the ripple effects became very hard to ignore. Agents adjusted their strategies, clubs reassessed market values, and younger players started looking at SPL as a real option rather than a place they might end up at in the tail end of their careers.
The rise of SPL reflects something deeper that is taking place in modern football. Whether or not a league can find success relies heavily on money, and the will to put infrastructure in place. That type of long term planning has lacked in other attempts at forming leagues. That’s not to say challenges don’t remain. There are reports of inconsistent attendance, and many fans comment about the inconsistent level of play of the teams. Also, player development needs to deepen for the league to gain more credibility.
The organization continues to pursue ambitious goals. Officials hope to secure World Cup hosting at some point, create new talent development programs, as well as expand global broadcasting deals. The Saudi Pro League has established itself as a force that has changed the discussion about football. If the next phase delivers, it may help shape where the global game goes next.
