Most New York Mets fans may be OK with this trade-off.
But after signing Bo Bichette to a three-year, $126 million contract, other Mets fans may be confused to learn that the deal comes with sacrifices.
"Since the Toronto Blue Jays issued Bichette a qualifying offer, the Mets are set to lose their second- and fifth-highest selections in this year’s draft plus $1 million from their international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period," The Athletic's Will Sammon wrote Sunday.
For New York, that could mean losing out on several prospects who could've helped the Major League team sometime down the road. However, Bichette will be an everyday contributor.
Are the Mets in danger of losing more draft picks?
They could be, if they decide to target free agents who denied the qualifying offer from their old clubs.
"If the Mets sign another player with a qualifying offer attached to him, they would forfeit their third- and sixth-highest picks as well," Sammon added. "The free agents available with qualifying offers are both starting pitchers: Framber Valdez and Zac Gallen."
Sammon reported that the Mets are looking to add to their rotation, and Valdez and Gallen are two of the top starters remaining on the market.
