Why Scottie Scheffler isn't playing this week at Houston Open with Masters looming

1 hour ago 3

Scottie Scheffler was supposed to play at the Texas Children's Houston Open this week.

Plans changed, though, and the world's No. 1 golfer isn't on the course with just a couple weeks remaining until the Masters.

It's a bummer for a tournament that has a lot of quality golfers in the field. Having Scheffler is always a massive draw, both for fans in person and for those who are tuning in on TV.

The tournament is still a notable one, and the rest of the field will appreciate the chance to go for a win without Scheffler breathing down their necks.

It's still an unexpected absence, though, and it has fans trying to figure out what's going on.

Why isn't Scottie Scheffler playing this week?

Scheffler has a great reason for not playing this week at the Houston Open.

Golf Channel reports that the birth of Scheffler's second child is "imminent."

Scheffler and his wife Meredith already have one child, a son, Bennett. Bennett was born on May 8, 2024.

Now, it sounds like Scheffler is going to have a second kid soon before the Masters begin. Maybe that's a positive omen.

When is the Masters?

The Masters will begin two weeks after the Houston Open teed off. The Thursday first round at Augusta National is on April 9.

Scheffler should be back and ready to roll for that tournament, although his preparation schedule does get a bit thrown off by his absence from Houston.
