Not many NBA referees have nicknames. Scott Foster does, though.
They call him "The Extender."
That's going to be in focus when the San Antonio Spurs host the New York Knicks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night.
The Knicks lead the series 3-1.
The Spurs have to win at home to prolong the NBA season and spoil a potential Knicks party on their home floor.
That's where Foster, and his nickname, come in.

Why is Scott Foster called 'The Extender'?
Foster is believed to do a good job of ensuring series go longer.
There are folklore-type examples among NBA fans of Foster being out there for games that could've been clinchers but were instead won by the other team.

By this logic, Foster will "help" the Spurs out with some calls to get them over the line with a win.
It's almost certainly not that simple, and the narrative is likely blown out of proportion.
But still, the crew of Foster, James Capers and Tyler Ford will have everyone watching them closely on Saturday night.
