After being selected eighth overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun, Saniya Rivers should have been celebrating the start of her professional career. But shortly after the draft, she was faced with the unimaginable — the loss of her mother.

“Losing my mom has been the toughest thing I’ve ever faced in my life,” Rivers said. “I’m playing for her.”

Despite the heartbreak, Rivers has stayed focused on the game, channeling her grief into motivation. She put up a strong performance against the Las Vegas Aces with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

Then, in her first career start against the top team in the West, the Minnesota Lynx, she showed just how versatile and composed she can be. Rivers delivered an all-around effort with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks, making an immediate impact as a starter.
