Alex Bregman has been one of the best signings of the offseason, but the Red Sox third baseman is about to miss some time.
Bregman suffered a right quad injury in Friday's game against the Orioles and immediately needed to leave the game. On Saturday, Cora told the media that Bregman's injury was "significant" and will require the veteran to have a lengthy stay on the injured list.

It's unclear exactly how long Bregman will be out, but he dealt with a similar injury earlier in his career that may be a guide for when he will return. In the meantime, the Red Sox will have to find a way to replace one of their best hitters.
Here's the latest on Bregman's injury.

How long is Alex Bregman out?
Bregman has a right quad strain, and he doesn't have a timeline to return right now. Alex Cora compared the injury to a similar quad strain that Bregman suffered in 2021, which cost him over 50 games in a two-month stretch while playing for the Astros.
If Bregman follows a similar timeline, he will be out until after the All-Star break in the middle of July. In exactly one month from Sunday, on July 25, Boston hosts the Dodgers for a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Marcelo Mayer call up
To replace Bregman on the roster, the Red Sox are calling up highly-touted prospect Marcelo Mayer, who is considered a top-10 prospect in all of baseball. The No. 4 pick in the 2021 MLB draft, Mayer is primarily a shortstop but can play all over the infield and gives Boston a talented player to replace Bregman in the short term.
Exactly who will play third base for Boston is still to be determined, but the Red Sox have a variety of infielders who could play the position. With Trevor Story at shortstop, Mayer could move to third base, or he could play more second base with someone else moving to third.
Among active Red Sox players, the only two players with big-league experience at third base are Rafael Devers and Abraham Toro. However, Devers seems cemented as the team's designated hitter, while Toro is more of a depth option who has been playing first base.
Other Red Sox infielders include Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton, both of whom have been rotating at second base this season.
