Why Mercury's Kelsey Plum blockbuster is just crazy enough to work

Most WNBA fans woke up Sunday morning to the news that Kelsey Plum had been traded to the Phoenix Mercury.

And on its face, the trade is a head-scratcher for Phoenix.

The Mercury is 11-19 and six games out of a playoff spot with just 14 games left. The price to prize Plum away from the Los Angeles Sparks cost Phoenix a superb defensive guard on a cost-controlled contract in Monique Akoa Makani, as well as two draft picks -- including a potential lottery selection in the loaded 2027 draft.

However, the Mercury's swoop for Plum is very on-brand for an organization that is allergic to rebuilding and wants to contend again as soon as possible.

Even though Plum is a pending free agent next spring, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Sunday morning that there is "shared excitement" between Phoenix and the star guard about a future together.

Plum reportedly will still go through the full free agency process in the offseason, but the Mercury will have the first crack at convincing the 32-year-old to sign long-term.

Phoenix has the league's oldest roster and is adding Plum to a core that includes All-Stars Alyssa Thomas (34), Kahleah Copper (31) and DeWanna Bonner (38). But the Mercury didn't acquire Plum just so franchise owner Mat Ishbia could boast about the number of stars playing in the desert.

Plum arrives for valid basketball reasons to help a Mercury team that ranks a dismal 12th in offensive efficiency. The two-time WNBA champion is the league's second-leading scorer, and she is an elite shot creator -- with and without the basketball in her hands.

Plum will be prepared for more off-ball actions in an offense that has been designed for Thomas. She is an elite finisher for her position and is shooting an eye-popping 85.7 percent at the rim this season.

In addition, Plum's 3-point shooting always has been reliable and will be a major upgrade for the starving Phoenix offense. Only rookie Noémie Brochant (39.4 percent) is shooting better from beyond the arc than Plum (38.3 percent), whose volume in Los Angeles was much higher.

Of course, the trade is inherently risky. Phoenix gave up draft capital and a valuable young guard for six weeks of Plum; if she walks in free agency, the Mercury will be left with nothing.

But Phoenix is betting that Plum will be a seamless fit and guarantee at least a respectable finish to the 2026 season, barring a miraculous turnaround that puts it in the playoffs. By re-signing Plum for 2027, the Mercury will have created a new "Big Three" and should enter next season with its championship credentials re-established.
