Why Max Verstappen is starting from pit lane in Formula 1 race today

Max Verstappen had a nightmare qualifying round.

The Formula 1 superstar was eliminated from the first round of qualifying after his Red Bull car didn't deliver.

He ended up qualifying in 16th for the Brazilian Grand Prix, which takes place Sunday.

“It's just no grip,” he told reporters. “Changed a few things on the car and it didn't work, so that's something that we need to figure out. Nothing really seems to work. We change a lot on the car and, yeah, we just don't understand. Something is clearly just not working for us. Even with the changes on the set-up, normally you would feel some kind of reaction, but it doesn't. So, yeah, something is just really off.”

And because of that, Verstappen is making a strategic decision.

Why is Max Verstappen starting in pit lane?

Max Verstappen has decided to take a penalty in order to change his car.

His Red Bull team is making further car tweaks to try and fix what was wrong.

Because they're making changes after qualifying, Verstappen is bumped into pit lane to start the race.

Because he had only qualified in 16th, his team feels that's worth it in order to get a new engine into his vehicle.
