The layoffs are part of a wider plan by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team. Their goal? To bring United’s finances back in shape.
CEO Omar Berrada had warned back in February that more job cuts were coming, calling it part of a “transformation plan.”
This is now the second major wave of redundancies in less than a year, following around 250 roles cut last season.
The latest round includes many long-serving and well-liked staff — a move that’s hit morale harder than a last-minute goal against.
Sources close to the club say the timing couldn’t have been worse. The mood at the screening event was already low, and learning about job losses just hours after the final added salt to the wound.
The club’s share price also took a hit, dropping by over £160 million ($215 million) the day after the loss.
At a time when fans are calling for changes on the pitch, the backroom is being reshaped too — though not the way many hoped.
