Why Luke Kuechly is joining Netflix's NFL broadcast booth for 2026 season

A man of many talents, Luke Kuechly has largely stayed out of the public eye since stepping away from the gridiron following the 2019 season.

The 35-year-old was one of the league's greatest linebackers of all-time, achieving Hall of Fame distinction for his efforts with the Panthers.

Six years on from his untimely retirement, Kuechly is making headlines for another notable reason: he's set to appear as Netflix's lead analyst for its NFL coverage this season.

Here's what you need to know about the streaming giant's decision to make the gifted former linebacker the leading name for its broadcasts this season.

NFL broadcast booth

Per The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, Kuechly impressed Netflix's overseers with his broadcasting chops during a recent tryout. The 35-year-old is something of an odd choice to partner with Eagle — unlike other notable players-turned-analysts like Tom Brady, Tony Romo and Troy Aikman, Kuechly was not a quarterback, largely spurning the spotlight despite authoring up a legendary career.

Nevertheless, he has gained valuable experience as a radio analyst on Panthers broadcasts and hosts a podcast with former teammate JJ Jansen. Kuechly also guest-starred in two "Monday Night Football Playbook" alt-casts alongside Dan Orlovsky and Field Yates.

Per Marchand, Kuechly and Eagle showcased "immediate chemistry." Netflix's executives were blown away with the pairing's display during tryouts, prompting them to offer the Hall of Famer the full-time gig.

Luke Kuechly broadcast career

Kuechly quickly picked up broadcasting following the conclusion of his playing career. The former Carolina standout moved to a scout role in the Panthers' organization after retirement but left his post one year later. In 2022, he formally started his broadcasting career, joining Carolina's radio broadcast crew as an analyst.

In 2024, Kuechly added to his resume, offering analytical musings as part of CBS Sports' college football crew. He made two appearances on ESPN2's "Monday Night Football Playbook" last season. He also is the co-host of "JJ and Luke", a podcast he started with former teammate JJ Jansen earlier this year.

When did Luke Kuechly retire?

Kuechly called it quits in 2019, stepping into the sunlight after a glistening eight-year career that saw the Boston College product collect five first-team All Pro nods and the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year award. Kuechly ended his career at the tender age of 28, citing injuries — including concussions — as the reason he ended his glistening spell in the NFL.

He was elected to the Hall of Fame on his second ballot in 2026.
