The New York Jets are in the middle of a rough season in year one of the Aaron Glenn experience. Sitting at 0-7, the Jets are one more loss away from entering the Week 9 bye without a win.
In the final opportunity before the bye week, the Jets will face the Cincinnati Bengals, but in the days before the game, a starting quarterback has yet to be announced. It'll either be Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor, but the decision isn't known yet.
But does this decision matter much for Glenn and the Jets? Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic brought up such a thought, and while it does matter for the Jets in Week 8, the starting quarterback decision has little bearing on the future of the organization.
Why Aaron Glenn's Week 8 starting quarterback doesn't matter for the Jets
"The wind seems to be blowing in the direction of the 36-year-old Taylor, starting for the second time this season." Rosenblatt writes. "But what Glenn decides, or has decided, doesn't matter all that much - not really."
Rosenblatt dove into why the Jets' Week 8 starting quarterback doesn't matter that much, focusing on how neither Fields nor Taylor is likely the future of the organization.
Taylor has thrown three interceptions in limited opportunities this season, while Fields has had paltry passing performances in back-to-back weeks, including -10 net passing yards against the Denver Broncos.
"The quarterback decision that truly matters for the Jets won't come until the offseason, when they are armed with a high draft pick and some salary cap flexibility," Rosenblatt writes.
At 0-7, the Jets are likely to land one of the top picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. If they wind up with the first overall pick, selecting a quarterback wouldn't be out of the question, especially if there aren't any better options in free agency or via trade.

With Glenn in control, as Woody Johnson has faith in the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, the decision in the offseason will be one to try and secure his future with the team.
Sticking with Fields or Taylor beyond 2025, based on their performance so far this season, would be malpractice. Even if there isn't a clear option, the Jets are likely to make a quarterback decision this offseason.
So, while the Jets Week 8 starter will have some bearing on whether the Jets enter their Week 9 bye 0-8 or not, it won't be the most important quarterback decision Glenn and the Jets will make in the next six months.
The starting quarterback in Week 8 won't matter to the Jets by the end of the season, as both Fields and Taylor won't have any impact on the future of the Jets franchise beyond whether they can win games and lower the Jets' draft slot.
