Why Jets can't add Brendan Sorsby after wild NFL decision

The New York Jets have been looking to add to their quarterback room this offseason, even after trading for Geno Smith and drafting Cade Klubnik in the NFL Draft.

While they could trade for a veteran or sign one in free agency, it did appear that the Jets would have the chance to take Brendan Sorsby in the NFL's Supplemental Draft.

However, in a stunning twist, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, the NFL has decided not to hold a Supplemental Draft. Meaning, the Jets can't add Sorsby to the team this offseason.

Why Jets can't add Brendan Sorsby through NFL Supplemental Draft

"Just in: NFL is declining to hold a supplemental draft this summer, currently leaving the 2027 Draft as the only way for QB Brendan Sorsby to enter the NFL," Schefter reports.

This is a significant update for the Jets, as Sorsby was one of the most intriguing possible QB options they could go after this offseason as a backup for Smith.

As Ian Rapoport reported, "In short, based on timing - inability to investigate the gambling issues in time - and the hope to avoid a distraction for teams prior to the season, there will be no draft. There is no other avenue for Sosrby to enter the NFL."

Since the NFL isn't holding a supplemental draft this summer, the only way for Sorsby to enter the league is through the 2027 NFL Draft. While the Jets might still add Sorsby, it now looks like it would come after the 2026 season.

After Russell Wilson retired from the NFL for a CBS Sports TV gig, the Jets are now forced to explore other backup QB options with Sorsby no longer able to enter the NFL this season.

While there had been some pushback about the Jets being a fit for Sorsby, any of those questions have now been answered by the NFL's decision not to hold a supplemental draft.

Sorsby can't enter the league this year, and the Jets, in turn, can't add the former Texas Tech QB to their roster as an intriguing developmental option.
