The Boston Red Sox are not having the best 2026 season at all, but they are still trying to stay in the fight for the AL Wild Card, which is a wide-open competition right now.

While they might be heading towards the trade deadline as sellers if things don't change from now until August 3, that doesn't mean they can't still try to improve by adding players to the roster.

That's what the Red Sox just did, as Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports, the Red Sox are signing former San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers 31-year-old veteran catcher Andrew Knizner to a contract.

"Sources: Red Sox have signed veteran catcher Andrew Knizner to a minor league deal," Cotillo reports.

Knizner is a seven-year MLB veteran who played with the Giants during the 2025 season, the Rangers in 2024, and the Cardinals from 2019 through 2023.

Last season, he played in 33 games, accumulating 0.3 bWAR and recording a .598 OPS in 77 at-bats. The year prior, Knizner struggled mightily in 35 games and 90 at-bats for the Rangers, posting -0.8 bWAR with a .394 OPS.

During his Cardinals tenure, he played in 255 games, had 714 at-bats, and posted 1.5 bWAR with a .216 batting average and a .621 OPS.

His best season was in 2023, when he had a .712 OPS with 10 homers, posting 1.0 bWAR for the Cardinals in 70 games.

Knizner is now joining the Red Sox organization, agreeing to a deal to join the minor leagues for Boston as some catching depth behind Carlos Narvaez, Connor Wong, and Mickey Gasper.
