Why it 'isn't clear' if Yankees will make third base upgrade over Ryan McMahon

The New York Yankees may have a few needs for the trade deadline.

Adding to the bullpen should be a priority, but there also may be essential additions for the left side of the infield, specifically third base.

The Athletic's Brendan Kuty wrote Tuesday that the Yankees could eye an upgrade over Ryan McMahon at third, but it may be too early in the season to tell how they approach their plan at the position.

"The easy answer would be yes," Kuty responded when asked if the Yankees should prioritize making an upgrade at the hot corner. "Ryan McMahon’s offense this season has been almost unplayable. But the real answer isn’t clear yet."

McMahon's offensive production at the plate leaves much to be desired. However, in the last 10 games, McMahon has hit .300 with three home runs. He's supposed to have a strong glove, but his minus-3 defensive runs saved is also not pretty.

"McMahon’s past performance implies he should rebound, at least as part of a platoon. He has a career .757 OPS against righties. But the changes he made to his swing in the offseason and spring haven’t paid off," Kuty wrote. "Another issue? The Yankees owe him $16 million next year, too, and it’s hard to imagine them cutting bait with that kind of salary."

For now, the Yankees may have no other option but to hope that McMahon increases his production over the next few months.
