Taylor Fritz has been eliminated from the ATP Finals group stage this year. The American was stunned by Alex De Minaur in his third group-stage bout, 7-6(3), 6-3.
As things stand, De Minaur, Fritz, and Lorenzo Musetti have two points on the board from the Jimmy Connors group. Musetti has yet to face Alcaraz in their final group-stage round.
That raises the question as to why Fritz has been eliminated before the Italian and De Minaur. Let's find out:
Why has Taylor Fritz been eliminated from the ATP Finals?

The American's recent loss leaves him with two defeats in the group stage, making it impossible for him to finish among the top two. Even if Alcaraz beats Musetti, Fritz’s record and set percentage are not enough to surpass either Alcaraz or De Minaur.
His straight-set loss further reduced any chance of qualifying through the tiebreak criteria. As a result, Fritz is officially out of contention, and the final group match between Alcaraz and Musetti will now decide the two semifinalists.
Can Lorenzo Musetti qualify even after losing to Carlos Alcaraz?

If Musetti beats Alcaraz in the final group match, both players will finish with two wins and one loss each, while De Minaur will remain with one win. In that case, the Italian would top the group with a superior head-to-head record, and Alcaraz would qualify second based on his earlier straight-sets win over De Minaur.
However, if Alcaraz wins the match, he would finish as the group winner with three victories. Musetti would then be eliminated alongside Taylor Fritz, and De Minaur will be the second participant to qualify for the semifinals.
