Why is Morocco called MAR? Explaining country code for 2026 World Cup team

1 hour ago 3

Morocco loudly announced itself as one of the world's finest footballing sides during the 2022 World Cup, striking down Spain and Portugal en route to a fourth-place finish in Qatar — the best-ever World Cup showing by an African and Arab nation.

Four years on, the Atlas Lions look well-equipped to repeat their feat — or perhaps go one step further. Led by a handful of noteworthy stalwarts, including Brahim Diaz, Ibrahim Saibari and youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi, Morocco finds itself in prime position to make another deep run in the famous tournament.

After drawing the ire of much of the African continent with its antics during the latest African Cup of Nations, Mohamed Ouahbi's side has taken a step forward, spraying the ball around the field while striking fear in opposition's back lines.

Morocco's name carries weight at the international level. So why, exactly, is the country's code "MAR" rather than the "MOR" acronym conventional wisdom would suggest for Morocco to bear?

Here's what you need to know.

Why is Morocco MAR?

Morocco's abbreviation in "MAR" because the country's official title in French is "Maroc."

The title is a reflection of the nation's colonial history. Before achieving independence in 1956, Morocco was a French and Spanish protectorate, with the former conquering large swaths of Morocco's land — despite intense resistance from the indigenous population — during the early 20th century.

Morocco's official languages are Arabic and Tamazight. However, French still has a presence in the country. The national team's crest bears the scars of that relationship, with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) being written in French in addition to Arabic.

Morocco's modern Arabic name is al-Maghrib, short for "al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyah", which translates directly to the Kingdom of Morocco in English. Still, FIFA — like the IOC — opts for the country's French moniker, instead.
