Why Gwendoline Christie Wore a Mask of Her Own Face at Met Gala 2026

Anna Wintour Reacts to Rumors She Approves All Met Gala Looks

Now this is a look worthy of the Seven Kingdoms.

As part of the Met Gala 2026 host committee, Gwendoline Christie descended upon the May 4 event in dramatic fashion, stepping out at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art in a stunning red gown with an oversized feather headpiece by her longtime partner Giles Deacon.

Taking the dress code of “Fashion Is Art” to heart, the Game of Thrones alum completed her look with a mask of her own face created by Gillian Wearing. (Click here to see all the red carpet fashion.)

“What I love about it is that it isn’t one thing: It’s not just the mask. It isn’t just a mirror. It's so many things," she said of the unconventional accessory in a Vogue interview. "Is it a shield? Is it an expression?”

And Gwendoline was in good company. After all, this year's host committee was co-chaired by Zoë Kravitz and Saint Laurent creator director Anthony Vaccarello, with a star-studded lineup including Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Doja Cat, Sam Smith, Lena Dunham and Chase Sui Wonders rounding out the group.

Of course, Vogue icon Anna Wintour helmed this year's Met Gala, themed "Costume Art." Meanwhile, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams served as co-chairs, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos sponsoring the lavish affair alongside their honorary co-chair roles.

But this isn't Gwendoline's first time at the Met Gala. She made her debut at the 2023 iteration in a pale pink Fendi gown as a nod to late designer Karl Lagerfeld, whose storied career was the focus that year.

The Severance actress returned to fashion's biggest night in 2024, when she tapped into the "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" theme in Red Riding Hood-inspired caped ensemble from Maison Margiela custom designed by John Galliano.

At the time, she had teased her blonde hair into an ethereal, sky-high 'do, adding even more inches to her 6-foot-3 frame.

"Because I’ve always been so conscious of my height, I’ve always been consciously feminized," she told Vogue in a 2023 interview. "Because if you’re always told you’re not attractive, you go the other way when you have the liberty and the means, to make yourself as conventionally attractive as you can."

However, fashion allowed her expand her horizons as a child.

"I used to spend Friday night with my mother’s makeup," Gwendoline explained, "and I’d practice becoming something other than myself."

She added, "It seemed to me the most accessible and conventional means of transformation and reinvention."
