The NFL trade deadline used to be one of the slowest in the four major American sports. There has been a recent shift, though, and teams have started wheeling and dealing at the deadline.
The 2025 NFL trade deadline saw eight deadline day deals, tied for the most moves on trade deadline day in NFL history. Even more, there were some blockbuster deals made as the New York Jets shipped out Quinnen Williams (Dallas Cowboys) and Sauce Gardner (Indianapolis Colts) to get back three first-round picks, a second-round pick and more.
Many of the deals involved depth pieces, but the Colts going full win-now and getting Gardner made many wonder if the perennial top contenders in the AFC would make a move to match what Indianapolis did.
They did not.
Here is more on why the Bills, Chiefs, Steelers and Patriots didn't make any moves at the 2025 NFL trade deadline.

Did Bills make a trade?
Buffalo stayed pat on trade deadline day. The Bills were reportedly interested in Washington Commanders wide receiver Deebo Samuel and a reunion with pass rusher Von Miller. No move was eventually made so that likely means if Buffalo inquired, Washington's price tags were too steep for the Bills to take.
Buffalo's biggest needs were wide receiver and pass-rush depth. The Bills likely didn't feel the need to go after a wide receiver because Gabe Davis was activated to the practice squad a week ago and could soon get elevated to the active roster. On the pass rush side, Buffalo may have just been priced out of Miller, or they are hopeful that they can get some pieces healthy on the defensive side of the ball to provide a boost.

Did Chiefs make a trade?
Kansas City was linked to several running backs at the trade deadline, but didn't make a move. Many believed that a Week 9 loss to the Buffalo Bills would have been enough to convince the Chiefs to be active at the deadline, but that didn't come to pass. Kansas City stayed put, likely due to the boosts it had already received with Rashee Rice recently coming off his six-game suspension and offensive lineman Josh Simmons returning from his personal leave.
In the running back department, the Chiefs reunited with former first-round selection Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was released by the New Orleans Saints and signed to Kansas City's practice squad.

Did Steelers make a trade?
Fans and analysts have been predicting that Pittsburgh would trade for a wide receiver for two years. It finally happened when the Steelers acquired DK Metcalf, but then the franchise traded away George Pickens, still leaving them without a WR2. Pittsburgh was linked to former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, but was eventually outbid by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who traded a fourth and a sixth-round pick for the wide receiver.
Pittsburgh was coming off a huge win over Indianapolis in Week 9, with the Steelers' expensive defense finally living up to its billing. The Steelers may have looked into trading for depth, but no moves happened, and Pittsburgh heads into the second half of the season trying to ride its momentum.

Did Patriots make a trade?
New England has been a surprise this season, and heads into Week 10 with a 7-2 record, sitting atop the AFC East. The Patriots had been in the market for a running back, reportedly, which was surprising because New England used a second-round pick on TreVeyon Henderson in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Patriots aren't fixing what isn't broken and decided not to make any moves.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that AFC East teams inquired about deals with the Jets, but the franchise wasn't willing to deal within the division. New England could have reached out about Gardner, Williams, Breece Hall or Jermaine Johnson II, but it would make sense that the report was about New England or Buffalo reaching out to New York at the deadline.
