Why Diamondbacks signed suspended Max Kepler, and how long he will be out

On Sunday, the Arizona Diamondbacks signed Max Kepler, which wouldn't be all that odd except for one big thing.

Kepler is facing a massive suspension.

The outfielder was suspended in the offseason, and it's something that he actually has been serving while being a free agent.

Now, he'll have an organization to return to when he's allowed.

Why did the Diamondbacks sign Max Kepler?

Arizona apparently decided they wanted Kepler in their organization and playing baseball games by the end of the year.

He had a .691 OPS last season before being suspended for performance-enhancing drugs, which definitely sets up some easy jokes for fans on social media.

Still, Kepler has shown in his career to at times have a legitimate left-handed power stroke.

The Diamondbacks likely figured this was their best chance to get him aboard, and they'll wait for him to get back.

How long is Max Kepler out with suspension?

Kepler's suspension was for 80 games.

It did begin while he was a free agent. He's eligible to return on June 25.

That means the Diamondbacks could have him this summer.
