Why Cristian Volpato is switching from Italy to Australia's Socceroos 2 weeks before World Cup

Cristian Volpato has contemplated the move before.

Now, it's finally happening. He's switching his international allegiance from Italy to Australia. He's heading to the World Cup with the Socceroos.

ESPN's Joey Lynch reported the news on Friday, adding that he'll be flying to Los Angeles on Saturday to join the Australian squad.

Australia plays Mexico in a friendly on Saturday, and then they're expected to name their official World Cup group.

Four years ago, Volpato turned down the chance to play at the World Cup with Australia. Apparently, his thoughts have changed.

Why is Cristian Volpato switching from Italy to Australia?

Volpato has clearly decided that his best chance to suit up at a World Cup was with the Aussies, not the Italians.

He was raised in Sydney, but Volpato has represented Italy at the junior level since 2022.

Volpato initially joined powerhouse club side Roma in Italy, and he now plays in Serie A for Sassuolo.

Italy's latest squad for friendlies didn't include Volpato.

Lynch notes that Australia also recently lost attacker Riley McGree to injury.

Volpato won't be able to play for Italy in a future World Cup, assuming this move is completed, and so he'll now represent his birth country on the international level.
