The Oklahoma City Thunder have officially listed Chet Holmgren as out for tonight’s matchup against the Washington Wizards due to lower back soreness.
Holmgren began experiencing discomfort following the team’s 101–94 win over the Dallas Mavericks on October 27, a game in which he posted 18 points and 11 rebounds on 60% shooting from the field. The Thunder held him out of the second night of their back-to-back against the Sacramento Kings, a contest they still managed to win 107–101, improving to 5–0 to start the 2025–26 season.
In four appearances this season, Holmgren has averaged 23.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.6 stocks (steals plus blocks) while shooting 56.9% from the field and 41.7% from three.
Holmgren missed a significant portion of last season with a hip injury and is hoping this latest issue isn’t related. Despite his absence, Oklahoma City didn’t miss a beat against Sacramento, getting a lift from Ajay Mitchell, who scored 18 points in 24 minutes off the bench, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who notched another 30-point performance to lead the way.
The Thunder are still without Isaiah Joe (knee) and Jalen Williams, who continues to recover from offseason wrist surgery. However, the team did welcome back Alex Caruso from a concussion, and he made an immediate impact with a +18 box plus/minus, second only to Gilgeous-Alexander.
Running a small-ball lineup behind Isaiah Hartenstein, Oklahoma City has continued to thrive by emphasizing pace, three-point shooting, and foul drawing. Still, four of their five wins have come by seven points or fewer, underscoring just how narrow their margin for error has been early in the season.
Holmgren’s next opportunity to return will come on November 2 when the Thunder face the New Orleans Pelicans.
