'DWTS' Alum Cheryl Burke Defends Carrie Ann Inaba Against Critics

Cheryl Burke is back in the Dancing With the Stars ballroom.

Indeed, nearly three years after the pro unlaced her dancing shoes for good, she is now returning as a guest judge for season 34's Halloween night Oct. 28.

"It's been 3 years since my final dance and official retirement, and I still remember that night like it was yesterday," she gushed on Instagram Oct. 21. "To return now, from the other side of the floor, is something I'll never take for granted."

Cheryl—who exited the ABC dance competition after 26 seasons—will be judging alongside Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba, as well as former pro Derek Hough

While the 41-year-old is returning for the spookatular evening as a visitor, she is no stranger to the toll of being a pro. In fact, it was among the reasons she decided to retire.

"There is wear and tear," she explained of the physical toll to E! News in November 2022. "But also, my heart is telling me to see what else is out there. We are human and we evolve. I do. At least I would like to say that I am a work in progress forever."

"I do know, though, that this is not the end of my career and I want to be able to see what else is out there," she continued. "And Dancing with the Stars, the schedule is so intense. I've got so many projects that I've been working on."

Although the Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast host—who was on DWTS from seasons two to 19 before a second stint from season 23 to 26—believes her retirement was the best move for her, it wasn't an easy decision to make.

"This show has been my 2nd family since I was 21 years old," she explained on her Instagram at the time. "The cast, crew & fans have seen me through my highest highs & some of my lowest lows, & I honestly don't know who I would be today without them. I also know that it is time for me to begin the next phase of my career, although dance will always be a part of me."

In fact, she emphasized that she's looking forward to the following chapters of her career.

"I am excited about the idea of evolving, about being challenged in new ways," the two-time Mirrorball winner reflected, "having the ability to expand my commitment to mental health advocacy, focusing on my new found love for podcasting, & I'm ready to face the uncertainty (though it's scary as s--t) of what the future holds - I do have a few things up my sleeves though, so don't worry."

Now, keep ready to see all the season 34 celebs and pros dancing for the Mirrorball trophy.
