Why Bears clearing $17 million in cap space decision is very interesting

The Chicago Bears are heading into the 2026 NFL season with some clear question marks on the defensive side of the ball. Coby Bryant sustained a serious injury that is going to force him to miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season.

Safety isn't the only issue, as the defensive line, especially after the trade of Gervon Dexter, is now a real question. This defense really could use a bit more help. To do so, the Bears need more cap space at their disposal.

That cap space problem isn't one any longer, as Field Yates of ESPN is reporting the Bears have cleared $17 million in cap space in what is a very interesting decision that could hint at a roster move in the near future.

"The Bears have restructured the contracts of G Joe Thuney, DE Dayo Odeyingbo and LB TJ Edwards, creating ~ $17M in 2026 salary cap space," Yates reports.

Clearing $17 million in cap space adds to the $5.4 million in cap space they came into the season with, according to overthecap.com.

Adding so much money could mean a few different things. One reason for this decision is to pave the way for a new contract extension. But with Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden, and Colston Loveland not able to sign extensions, that might not be it.

This cleared cap space could also give the Bears the necessary room to make another free-agent signing. With a need at edge rusher, they could try and sign someone like Joey Bosa or Haason Reddick.

Clearing some cap space could grant the Bears the room needed to bring in a veteran through free agency.

Potentially the most exciting impact of these cap-clearing moves from the Bears is that a trade could be on the horizon.

Maybe it's for Josh Sweat, who the Bears have been linked to amid their edge rusher need. It could also be for another defensive back with some question marks in the secondary.

This is an interesting decision from the Bears' front office, and while the exact reasoning for the cleared cap space is unknown, it's a situation Bears fans should monitor as the 2026 season gets underway.
