Why are there no Premier League games on Saturday? Explaining May 17 break in EPL schedule

Liverpool have sealed their 20th English title and the three relegation places have been filled.

Nevertheless, there is still plenty to play for in the Premier League in 2024/25, most notably in the battle for European qualification.

Arsenal, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest are all hoping to secure a place in next season's UEFA Champions League over the final two matchweeks.

But on Saturday, May 17 — just eight days before the season finale — there are no Premier League fixtures taking place.

Why are there no Premier League games on Saturday, May 17?

Last April, the Premier League and the Football Association entered into a renewed collaborative agreement for the FA Cup.

The knockout competition is the world's oldest in club football, and its final traditionally takes place at Wembley Stadium after the league season has concluded. However, under the new agreement, the FA Cup final will be staged on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season for the next six years.

The terms also grant the FA exclusivity to the day of the final, meaning no Premier League games can take place. The 2024/25 FA Cup final kicks off at 4:30 p.m. local time in London on Saturday, May 17, which is why there are no Premier League matches on the same day.

Why are Man City not playing in the Premier League this weekend?

Manchester City have reached the FA Cup final for a third successive season and face Crystal Palace at Wembley, making each team's absence from this weekend's Premier League action easy to explain.

City's home game against Bournemouth and Palace's match with Wolves have been moved to Tuesday, May 20 and will kick off at 8 p.m. BST (3 p.m. ET).

Tottenham and Manchester United have had their respective fixtures against Aston Villa and Chelsea moved forward to Friday, May 16 to allow extra preparation for the all-Premier League Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday, May 21.

Five Premier League games from matchweek 37 will take place on Sunday, May 18,  including Everton's final ever men's game at Goodison Park. Champions Liverpool travel to Brighton on Monday.
