Why Angels' Vaughn Grissom used an intentional bounce throw to second base to turn a double play

Vaughn Grissom fielded a ground ball at third base for the Los Angeles Angels and had a chance to throw to second to start a double play.

Grissom intentionally aimed for the ground and threw what amounted to a firm bounce pass.

It hopped right into the glove of Oswald Peraza, who fired on to first to complete the double play.

The best part is that Grissom almost certainly did this on purpose.

Why did Vaughn Grissom make a bounce throw?

Grissom seemed to recognize that the sun would make seeing a standard throw to second a lot harder to see.

The bounce took the ball out of the sun for most of its travel:

It's just a really cool play that you won't see very often.

It's not unheard of for an MLB infielder to bounce a throw on purpose, but it's usually on a long throw to first base -- often from the shortstop's backhand side -- to limit the risk of throwing the ball too high and instead trying to play a one-hopper to the glove.

On a short throw like this, distance obviously isn't the issue.

The sun was, and Grissom played it well. The Angels went on to win 5-1, too, so it was a positive day all around for them.
