Who is Tholindis in Genshin Impact?

If you have been playing through the recent Genshin Impact's Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon series, you’ve probably seen a woman named Tholindis in Rerir’s memories. She was his beloved and also a researcher who studied the Moons of Teyvat and their powers, specifically the Crimson Moon.

In Act IV, "An Elegy for Faded Moonlight", we also get to see fragments of her past and what kind of person she was before Khaenri'ah’s downfall 500 years ago. Through these moments, players can finally understand how her story influenced Rerir’s fate and the choices he had made from the past till the present in Genshin Impact.

Tholindis was the lover of Rerir, one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah. She was also a descendant of the Crimson Moon Dynasty, which was Khaenri'ah's initial dynasty before the Eclipse Dynasty. She was enrolled in the Universitas Magistrorum under the Moon Marrow Laboratory, which was like the national university of Khaenri'ah in Genshin Impact's history.

All her life, Tholindis was never close with her family and chose to leave them behind to pursue her life. This is seen in a fragment of her memories, which, for an unexplained reason, was coexisting within Rerir's. Based on her conversation with the boy named Orlog, Tholindis was not a direct but a distant descendant. She did not possess the X-shaped eyes like the direct descendants do in Genshin Impact.

Under the new Eclipse Dynasty, King Irmin was constantly on the hunt for Crimson Moon descendants as he deemed them a threat. Tholindis decided to hide away her connection to the Crimson Moon and only told her mentor at the university about this truth. Some time later, she had met Rerir, and eventually they both fell in love with each other. However, she never told him the truth about her bloodline.

Tholindis had dedicated her life to studying Moon Marrow, which was a fragment-like material related to the remains of the Crimson Moon when it collapsed. In her research, she aimed to find an alternate source of energy for Khaenri'ah so that they could replace the unstable powers that the kingdom had relied upon for many years.

However, her progress became limited as King Irmin started redirecting all resources and personnel towards researching Abyssal energy. Regardless, she continued to work alone, conducting experiments and understanding the nature of the Moons.

Soon enough, she discovered that this Marrow behaves as a spatial gateway to another world. She couldn't decipher the process or the whereabouts of this world, as she lacked the resources to do further research on it.

Over the years, Tholindis began noticing the King's growing instability and his obsession with the Abyssal powers. She feared that this was corrupting the nation and would lead to its downfall. In her final attempt to protect her Crimson Moon bloodline, she entrusted another descendant named Frithr with the Moon Marrow. She did this to ensure the Crimson Moon’s lineage would survive in the future.

In Genshin Impact's present day, that legacy continues through Arlecchino, the last known member of that bloodline. Even in Act III, the Traveler and Columbina managed to obtain the Iridescent Moon’s Marrow with Arlecchino’s help. Afterward, Columbina entrusted it to Arlecchino for safekeeping.

Tholindis and Rerir’s relationship in Genshin Impact

Her relationship with Rerir was loving but not built on honesty. Tholindis never let Rerir know about her connection to the Crimson Moon, while Rerir never told her about the type of work he does under King Irmin. Regardless, their bond was sincere in other aspects to the point that Rerir even proposed to her for marriage. She didn't give an answer yet, but was sure of her future with him.

Even when she was taken aback by knowing the truth behind Rerir's work, she tried to understand his position while also being in fear of her own. He was the reason behind many people of her bloodline being killed and was doing all this under direct orders from the King. She quietly aided the remaining survivors by helping them escape while also looking out for Rerir at the same time.

When Rerir came to save her from the Abyssal monsters invading the Universitas Magistrorum, he found her standing before the portal she had created through her research. Tholindis looked back at him and confessed that she was aware of his secret and also knew that he was going to come for him one day or the other.

Rerir tried to stop her by saying that it can be explained later, as he needs to get her to safety away from these monsters. Tholindis refused by claiming she had found a solution to free him from this burden and that he could finally have the normal life he desired. She stepped through the portal, leaving him behind.

This devastated Rerir and made him go down the path of the Sinners by letting Abyssal powers overcome him, becoming the Rächer of Solnari. He instantly used it to create another portal in pursuit of her. Till now, in Genshin Impact, he hasn't been able to find her or know what became of her all these years. He hunts down the Moons and their powers in revenge to make up for it.

Tholindis in Genshin Impact is one of the most memorable lore figures yet. Her story revealed a different side before Khaenri’ah’s fall and expanded what we know about the Moons. Since her tale remains vague and unfinished even now, we might learn more about her in future updates.
