The Texas Longhorns have added a big fish in the basketball world.
Marcus Spears Jr., a forward from the Lone Star State who has been considered the top recruit in the class of 2027, is now reclassifying in order to join the Longhorns for the upcoming 2026-27 season, per ESPN.
Spears, the son of ESPN analyst and former NFL defensive end Marcus Spears, is set to head to college earlier than anticipated, bringing a potential difference-maker to College Station.
Here's what to know about Spears and his decision to reclassify and join Texas.

Who is Marcus Spears Jr.?
Marcus Spears Jr. is a 6-foot-10 power forward from Dynamic Prep in Texas who has been considered the top men's basketball prospect in the Class of 2027. He is the son of Marcus Spears, who is now an ESPN analyst after playing defensive end in the NFL from 2005-13, also winning a national title at LSU in 2003.
The younger Spears took up basketball, however, and emerged as an elite prospect in recent years. Texas, Arizona, LSU and Kentucky were all in pursuit of the forward.
However, Texas has now won out — and Spears is set to join his sister on campus. Cari Spears plays volleyball for the Longhorns, per ESPN. Sean Miller didn't just land an elite recruit, but his program will have the benefit of bringing Spears in earlier than anticipated.
"Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I am excited to be part of it," Spears told ESPN. "The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship."
— ESPN (@espn) July 9, 2026Per ESPN, Spears was the only player to rank in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring, averaging 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds. He also helped lead USA Basketball to a gold medal at the FIBA U16 Men's AmeriCup in 2025, averaging14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
A left-handed forward, Spears has a 7-foot-2 wingspan and has earned a reputation for his strong two-way presence.
Marcus Spears Jr. reclassification
Spears has been considered the top prospect in the Class of 2027, originally slated to join a college team in 2027-28. Instead, he's reclassifying so he can join Texas this fall.
Per ESPN, the reclassification process began for Spears "about a month ago," when his mother, former WNBA player Aiysha Spears, told her husband, Marcus Spears, she thought their son should move up to 2026.
"The next day, we talked about it a little more, and then we sat down with Jr.," Marcus Spears told ESPN. "He was comfortable with the idea. He loved the challenge of it, and we explained the responsibilities that come with being a college freshman athlete."
