For college basketball fans, March Madness is the best time of the year. It is a three-week marathon of buzzer-beaters, bracket-busters, and the kind of high-stakes drama that only a single-elimination tournament can provide.
But while the rest of the nation prepares to fill out their brackets, the madness has already arrived in full force at the mid-major level. The Mid-American Conference has provided an early masterclass in postseason chaos, headlined by UMass’s stunning quarterfinal upset of a previously undefeated Miami (OH) squad.

When does March Madness start?
The NCAA Tournament begins with the First Four on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. While the tournament was historically 64 teams, the NCAA introduced the First Four in 2011, expanding the field to 68. These opening games always take place at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, and feature two matchups between 16-seeds fighting for a spot in the main bracket, alongside two matchups between the "Last Four In"—typically 10, 11, or 12-seeds.
The first round begins Thursday, March 19, once the field is finalized on Wednesday night, officially starting the three-week sprint toward the national championship in Indianapolis.
