It's a new era for Michigan football as Kyle Whittingham makes his Wolverines coaching debut Saturday.
The longtime Utah leader will open his tenure in Ann Arbor against a dangerous Western Michigan team before Oklahoma visits next weekend. But the Wolverines can't afford to look past the Broncos.
Western won 10 of its last 11 games last year, including the MAC Championship Game and a Myrtle Beach Bowl rout of Kennesaw State. QB Broc Lowry is back after throwing for 1,803 yards and nine touchdowns and rushing for another 963, plus 14 more TDs on the ground. The Broncos' top back, Jalen Buckley, also returns after reaching 1,003 yards on the ground in 2025.
They will have to hope that experience pays dividends against a Wolverines team working in a new system. Michigan still have plenty of top-end talent, though, led by consensus 2025 top recruit Bryce Underwood at QB and five-star freshman running back Savion Hiter, who joins sophomore Jordan Marshall in the backfield.
