Just now, the Minnesota Timberwolves made a three-team trade with the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons to send Mike Conley out of Minnesota. They got nothing in return, but it does point to two intriguing options.
With Mike Conley out, the T-Wolves saved $10.8 million off a two-year contract, which expired this season. And now, it allows them even more room to pursue either one superstar, or another.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks
Antetokounmpo has been on the T-Wolves’ radar for a while now, and while they seemed like they were on the outskirts of a trade, by freeing up some money, they now have a better chance at affording Milwaukee’s franchise superstar’s contract.
A duo of Anthony Edwards and Antetokounmpo would be lethal, as both are the cream of the crop when it comes to driving into the paint. Also, Edwards’ elite perimeter shooting will create gravity that pulls defenders from Antetokounmpo, and Antetokounmpo's drives will do the same for Edwards. A perfect, symbiotic relationship.
James Harden, Los Angeles Clippers
Harden is another name that has been linked to the Wolves, especially now that he’s made it known he wants out of Los Angeles. By trading Conley, it opens up a spot at point guard, where Harden has been playing for a while.
Currently, the T-Wolves are running Donte DiVincenzo at point, but he isn’t the playmaker or scorer Harden is. Making him the co-sixth man with Naz Reid would give Minnesota a solid bench.
Either way, the Timberwolves are gearing up for something big. Look for them to make a move to put themselves in front of the pack to win the Western Conference, and then their first NBA championship.
