What is E1 Series? All-electric raceboat world championship explained

2 hours ago 3

The second season of the E1 electric boat racing series is reaching a conclusion.

The curtain falls on the 2025 campaign with the finale from November 7-8 at Miami Seaplane Base on the waters of Biscayne Bay in Miami, FL.

Here, The Sporting News explains the pioneering racing series and the bigger electric sports picture behind it.

What is the E1 Series?

The E1 Series is the world's first electric boat racing championship, which pioneers innovation in marine racing and transportation.

At the heart of the action are the impressive 'RaceBirds' — 93kph foiling boats with 150 kilowatts of power in a Mercury Racing engine.

All owned by big-name celebrities, the nine E1 franchises compete head-to-head in F1-style races across seven venues.

Race weekends include qualifying and then a series of knockout races, with points being collated to crown a winning team at each event and then an overall Champion of the Water at the end of the season.

Team Brady, owned by former NFL quarterback Tom Brady, won the inaugural title last year.

Which celebrities own E1 franchises?

E1 teams are all owned by celebrities, who act as the faces of each franchise. Chief among them are sports stars, musicians and Hollywood icons, including basketball legend LeBron James, Indian cricket star Virat Kohli, Grammy award-winning artist Marc Anthony and Oscar winner Will Smith

E1 Series teams and pilots

The franchises in E1 compete in a similar format to Formula 1, with two pilots racing respective boats for each team to earn points, but unlike F1 there is no individual pilots' championship.

The only prize up for grabs at the end of the season is the overall team UIM E1 World Championship Presented by PIF.
