Although a Giannis Antetokounmpo-Miami Heat blockbuster deal is far from a done deal, most reports indicate that the Heat is the Milwaukee Bucks' NBA champion’s preferred destination.
Given the fact that Miami competes in the Eastern Conference and has the young pieces and draft capital to excite Milwaukee and its rebuilding efforts, it makes sense why it’s perceived as the top landing spot for Antetokounmpo.
That said, Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor’s recent report that Antetokounmpo would like to play for a ‘historical franchise’ opens the door for franchises like the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors to get involved.
“I’ve heard that Giannis would like to be with an historic franchise,” O’Connor said Tuesday. “Which I’m sure was part of the appeal with the Knicks…. If you go to Boston, historic franchise.”
“I don’t know if Miami counts as that, they’ve had so much success for Multiple decades, maybe they’re becoming that. Maybe Giannis can help them reach that level.”
If O’Connor’s report holds merit, there’s no denying that the Celtics, Lakers, and Warriors have earned the historical label. Boston (18 championships), Los Angeles (17 championships), and Golden State (seven championships) are all large-market organizations that have succeeded on the biggest stage on several occasions.
That said, if Antetokounmpo doesn’t change his stance on remaining in the Eastern Conference, Los Angeles and Golden State will face an uphill battle to move their way up the rankings.
Still, O’Connor’s valuable intel surrounding Antetokounmpo and a potential blockbuster offseason trade should be perceived as good news.
