Nearly 20 short years ago, Hilly Kristal’s New York institution known as the Country, Bluegrass, Blues Club — or CBGB for short — closed.
Thankfully, the iconic punk and new wave club lives on through the annual CBGB Festival.
Now, in its second year, the two-day extravaganza is bringing in some of the biggest names in alternative music like the “Godmother of Punk” Patti Smith, the “Pope of Mope”/Smiths frontman Morrissey, Rock Hall of Fame inductees (which they rejected!) The Sex Pistols, longtime New York City heroes Interpol and counterculture rockers Bikini Kill to ring in the occasion at Brooklyn’s Under The K Bridge Park on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Other biggies on the anti-authoritarian, one-day bill include Agnostic Front, Bad Nerves, Buzzcocks, Circle Jerks and Haywire.
Rounding out the expansive lineup are exciting acts like Mannequin Pussy, Upchuck, Militarie Gun, Panic Shock and Violet Grohl (Dave’s daughter!).
As for us, we’re personally most excited that Sleater-Kinney and Fred Armisen’s Ramones tribute band The Return of Jackie and Judy will be there, too.
All in all, 17 rule-breaking, envelope-pushing acts are slated to take the CBGB Stage and Hilly’s Stage from 2-10 p.m.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on single-day General Admission passes was $125 including fees on Vivid Seats.
VIP General Admission passes start at $416 including fees.
Perks of VIP (aka Very Important Punk) include main stage viewing, access to the VIP lounge and accelerated entry.
Last year, Erica Radol of The Post attended the “first” CBGB Festival and noted that “many, myself included, were skeptical that the heavily-sponsored event could honor the legacy of founder Hilly Kristal’s den of outsiders and geniuses.”
She then added that Gorilla Biscuits guitarist Walter Schreifels told her “Hilly would have been psyched. He loved music, and by virtue of that, he loved people. This [fest] is a recognition of that, by the name — but in fact, it’s bigger than that.”
So, yes, CBGB lives on…if just for one day a year.
