WWE star John Cena ended his in-ring career this week at Saturday Night's Main Event. The star closed out the show with a high-profile match against Gunther.
Cena and Gunther put on a hard-hitting classic in the main event. Despite the punishment from the Ring General, Cena kept fighting back. The fans were firmly behind the 17-time World Champion as he seemed close to winning the gold. However, Gunther finally caught him in a Sleeper Hold. The legend put up a wry smile and tapped out, ending the match and his in-ring career.
The fans were irate with the booking and booed Triple H when he showed up for Saturday Night's Main Event post-show. Hunter tried to explain the rationale behind the booking, but fans were having none of it. In fact, some fans even chanted that they wanted Vince McMahon back in the WWE. During the post-show, Michael Cole was talking about John Cena's career when cameras picked up fans in the back chanting, "We want Vince."
WWE featured Vince McMahon in a video package
After John Cena lost his final match to Gunther, WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk showed up to honor the legend. Triple H also made his way to the ring. The rest of the WWE locker room followed.
WWE aired a video package on the titantron, honoring the legend. Former boss Vince McMahon showed up in the vignette, talking about Cena's legacy. Although it was a past clip, WWE made the conscious decision to feature him. John himself was seen smiling when Vince showed up on the screen.
This was the first time WWE alluded to Vince after the former Chairman stepped away from the company due to the Janel Grant lawsuit. It will be interesting to see if this leads to more appearances in the future.
