Watch U.S. Olympic figure skating team's disastrous first pitch effort in latest Mets blunder

1 hour ago 3

The Mets tried to mix things up on the mound Thursday. Not with a trade or Triple-A replacement per se, but with the game's first pitch.

The U.S. Olympic figure skating team graced Citi Field on Thursday for a celebratory first pitch after the team returned stateside with two Olympic gold medals and a silver.

Unfortunately, the team's performance on the bump was not worthy of a fourth medal, with the pitches going awry as the team tried to flex their creative muscles.

Here's a closer look at the team's first pitch.

U.S. Olympic figure skating team throws out first pitch at Mets game

The Mets invited the U.S. Olympic figure skating team to throw out the first pitch at Citi Field on Thursday. With the team's athletic prowess, they tried to make the pitches their own, including lifting one another in the air to make two catches and a throw.

To prepare for the throw, ice dancer Anthony Ponomarenko lifted his partner, Christina Carreira, onto his shoulders to attempt a catch.

Given Carreira's limited range while hoisted in the air as opposed to an athletic stance on a diamond, she was unable to make the grab. The throw fell too low fand skidded off to the side, with the duo left unable to make a play.

There were multiple first pitches, though, with Vadym Kolesnik and Emilea Zingas attempting to do what their teammates could not. In this case, after a flip, their teammate Amber Glenn sailed one over the now heightened combination of Kolesnik and Zingas.
